……..so McCain is driving the Oldsmobile of political opportunism.

Remember the John McCain of 2000 who would be straight up with the press. Who brought out the best in people as the Republican challenger to George W Bush. Who was easily accessible and who talked about the issues, only to get maligned and battered by the innuendos and rumors disseminated by Karl Rove?

Well that John McCain is gone and in his place is a more hard nosed Republican, trying to placate the support of the 28% of the American people who align themselves with the Bush administration. Although he maintains a more moderate position on climate change and is against torture, and campaign finance reform. But who remains a staunch supporter of the Bush Administration’s economic policy, the continued occupation of the War in Iraq, and has been seeking the advice and support of some of the same Bush allies who had disparaged him years ago, as well as some social conservative figures (including an anti-catholic gay basher who is eager for the rapture to come and a Reverend who believes that the main objective of America is to destroy the Islamic faith (though I don’t recall seeing that in the Declaration of independence or the U.S constitution).

Anyway lately McCain has been calling for a clean campaign. However on the Daily Show the other night, literally almost in the same breath of reiterating his desire for a clean campaign, McCain then defended his use of saying that Barack Obama was endorsed by Hamas. He repeated that allegation today.

CNN Political Ticker:

”It is very obvious that Senator Obama shares nothing of the values or goals of Hamas, which is a terrorist organization,” McCain said, “But its also a fact that a spokesman from Hamas said that he approves of Obama’s candidacy. I think that’s of interest to the American people.”

How about that “clean campaign”? Either McCain forgets that in the sentence preceding the Hamas Obama comment, that he called for a clean campaign, or that he is playing such a clearly opportunistic game of balance between rallying the Conservatives while still trying to come off as above politics. Its is so Nixonian of him. One can start to see him morphing more and more into a pathetic Rovian character a little more every time he makes one of these baseless assertions.

DNA tests show that remains are those of former Czarist Prince, sister

Irony. On May Day, when socialists, anarchists, and “workers” around the world rally, the remains of Prince Alexia, the son of Russia’s final Czar Nicholas II who was overthrown by the Bolshevics, and his sister the Grand Duchess Maria have been identified, through DNA tests.

The two sets of bones were stumbled upon last Summer in Russian woodlands near Yekaterinburg, a town several hundred miles east of Moscow, where the last absolute monarch of Europe and his family were executed. The remains of Czar Nicholas II, his wife, and three of his daughters were found in 1991, but the remains of the Prince and his sister had remained elusive. The test were conducted by Russian and U.S genetic research teams.

Czar Nicholas II was forced along with his wife Alexandra, their four daughters, and their frail son Prince Alexia, to abdicate from power and were held prisoner until the family was shot by Bolsheviks in 1918.

Nelson Mandela on No Fly List

Former South African President and Anti-Aparthied Activist Nelson Mandela appears on the U.S Government’s ‘No Fly List’.

The “No Fly List”, a database intended to contain the names of known and suspected terrorists and thereby preventing them from boarding commertcial airlines, has long been criticized for its inefficency and inaccuracy.

In the past such high profile figures as singer and Muslim Cat Stevens, Catherine Stevens the wife of U.S Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), U.S Represenative Don Young (R- Alaska), and U.S Senator Edward M Kennedy (D-Massachusetts); have had the experience of being questioned and prevented from flying, after thier names had accidently appeared in the database. Currently there are about one million names in the database.

Recently it was discovered that a number of air marshals, assigned to board flights as undercover agents to guard cockpits against any possible intruders or terrorists, have been unable to board planes because thier names have accidently come up on the list, likely because thier names resemble those of some suspected terrorists or other people on the list. One Marshal even was berated for six years by his colleagues because his name was on the list.

Now, former political prisoner, anti-Aparthied Activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and the first elected President of South Africa Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress (ANC) have appeared on there.

United Press International:

Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s Nobel Prize-winning symbol of hope for leading the fight against aparthied, is reported still on U.S terrorist watch lists.

His inclusion means Mandela must have permission to enter the United States, USA Today said Thursday.

U.S Secretary of State Condelezza Rice calls it “embarassing” and some members of Congress vow to fix it, hopefully by Mandela’s 90th Birthday on July 18.

The same entry requirements apply to other members of South Africa’s governing African National Congress, the once banned anti-Aparthied organization.

In the 1970s and 80’s the ANC was offically branded a terrorist group by the ruling white minority government.

MY TAKE: We might want to fix this system now. Although this is hardly a suprise since Dick Cheney once voted against a resolution in the U.S Congress calling for Mandela’s release and in esscenece agreeing with the Aparthied era government that Mandela was a terrorist. Dick Cheney also views Gahngis Kahn as a man of peace by the way. Just kidding on that last part—– I think.

Pennsylvania Primary on Tuesday

The race is narrow, though Clinton continues to hold a narrow lead. But Obama’s overwhelming lead amongst college students in the keystone state seems to remain the same.

CBS News:

Among Pennsylvania students who will vote or have voted in a Democratic primary in any state, Obama leads Hillary Rodham Clinton 71 Percent and 25 percent and among those who intend to vote in the Pennsylvania primary, Obama leads by a nearly identical margin of 71 percent to 29 percent. Support for Obama is consistent across types and sizes of schools.

Also on Friday Veteran former Senators and Foreign policy heavyweights Dan Boren and Sam Nunn endorsed Obama. Also former Secretary of labor under the Clinton administration from 1993-1997 Robert Reich, also endorsed Obama.

Meanwhile Hillary Clinton gained some support from Ohio Representative Betty Suton (D-Ohio), as well as a pair of former Democratic New Jersey Governors Jim Florio and Brendan Byrne.

According to many opinion polls, the race in Pennsylvania continues to tighten as Tuesday the day of the contest draws nearer.

Parents Argue about son’s Future…. Namely What Gang He Should Belong To

Now I have heard of parents feuding over the future of their kids and having different visions for their children’s future. But this is ridiculous. Last week a man was arrested in Commerce City, Colorado, following an incident where the two were arguing over which gang their 4 year old son should belong to.

First saw this story via the Daily Gut.

The Denver Channel:

On Saturday, Joseph Manzanares stormed into the Hollywood Video store where his girlfriend worked, threatened to kill her and knocked over several video displays and even a computer, Commerce City Police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said.

After he ran out of the store, police were called and the 19 year old was arrested at his home.

His girlfriend told Police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to. The teen mother, who is black is a member of the Crips. Manzanores is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman said.

I know I should take this subject more seriously, but its hard to. I mean can you imagine two members of gangs who are bitter rivals getting together and baring a son, and constantly fighting over which gang colors he should be sporting and what hommies he should be rollin with, as they say? Mind boggling. Are we gonna have to have it so their is some sort of legal system where any parents have to legally be licenced, in order to avoid having morons like this raising kids?

It’s Hard out thier for a Humiliated ex-AG Under Investigation

Lately unemployment has been rising slightly. So all of you out there, if you happen to see a short hunched over man who looks familiar in the line at the unemployment office, he very well could be disgraced former U.S Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Apparently Gonzales, following his resignation under a cloud of suspicion and leaving a rickety U.S Justice Department in his wake can’t find a steady job with any law firm in the country. Add to that currently being investigated by the Solicitor general and possibly facing a number of criminal charges not to mention national headlines that make you sound like the most callow legal ‘mind’ in the United States, and life is well less then ideal to put it best.

New York Times:

He [Gonzales] has through friends put out inquires, they said, and has not found any takers. What makes Mr Gonzales’s case extraordinary is that former attorneys general, the government’s chief lawyer, are typically highly sought.

A longtime loyalist to George W Bush dating to their years together in Texas, Mr Gonzales was once widely viewed as a strong candidate to be the first Hispanic-American nominated one day to the U.S Supreme Court. A graduate of Harvard law school, he carried an impressive personal story as a child of poor Mexican immigrants.

Despite these credentials, he left office last August with a frayed reputation over his role in the dismissal of several federal prosecutors and the truthfulness of his testimony about a secret eavesdropping program. He has had no full time job since his resignation, and his principle income has come from giving a handful of talks at colleges and before private business groups.

This should be a cautionary tale not just to the Bush/Cheney administration, but to all those who are in close proximity or are in fact in the center of power. Just because you have risen high and wield such great power, doesn’t mean that if you abuse the American people and the principles of our land, seek to politicize an institution that is meant to serve all the people, and seek to serve in ones own avarice or unbinding loyalty to a master other then the broader public, doesn’t mean you can’t be brought down and forever shamed by your conduct.

MY TAKE: But don’t feel too sorry for the man who once in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee said “I don’t recall” 72 times. The same imbecile who hampered operations of the justice Department, terminated qualified and polished U.S Attorneys from their positions since they dare try and make the law apply to the Bush administration and their political allies in ideological arms. The man who approved of such methods of torture against detainees as water boarding (a medieval tactic that in the past has been employed by such lovers of justice and Democracy as the Japanese during World War II and the Khmer Rouge during their time in power in Cambodia. The same guy who casually brushed aside the right of habeus Corpus, lied to the American people, ok’d surveillance on Americans, subverting laws, cloaking the people’s government that was once envisioned by Washington, Jefferson, and Madison in secrecy. Well he is still making thousands in speaking fees.

I don’t mean to be harsh towards Gonzales. Traditionally , the primary mission of the Attorney General has been two fold some might say. The chief Attorney for the American people and the chief law enforcement officer, who is to keep order in check and prosecute both the common street thug and the powerful titan, both who should be equally accountable to the law of our society. Gonzales, brushed that mission aside and disgraced both the high office he once occupied as well as his country. Instead he made his continuous goal to be to shield the President from scrutiny and make what was once wrong and still is wrong for the common citizen and every other past leader right for Bush/Cheney. He desecrated both the common masses as well as the heritage that his office has held in the arms of history

And what a treasure for those of us who like our justice served, marinaded in the sauces and juices of irony. A former lawyer who once purged the Justice Department of several well-qualified attorney’s, now finds himself professionally at the mercy of those same types of lawyers he once fired and replaced with callow partisan Bush handmaidens, now finds himself going back to other attorney’s pleading for a job. Guess that old adage what goes around comes around, still applies.
