‘Rebel’ and ‘Wailers’

Just found out that things will really be happenin on the night of Thursday October 8th in the Valley. First off just eight days after the 54th anniversary of actor and icon of cool James Dean’s tragic death the second and perhaps best known of his three films (the last two released posthumously a year following his death) there will be a special screening of “Rebel Without a Cause” at the Amherst Cinema at 7PM.

The 1956 film follows the stories of a trio of confused adolescence. Jim (James Dean) is a troubled adolescent who has just moved to a new town with his parents seeking refuge from past demons and troubles. Judy (Natalie Wood) is the attractive girlfriend of the knife wielding drag racing boyfriend of a bully taunting Jim. Finally Plato (Sal Mineo) is the awkward loner largely orphaned by his parents seeking only friendship and family. The three converge on a night that turns into a tempestuous epic that will no doubt alter all forever.

Additionally that night at about 9PM at the Pearl Street nightclub in Northampton, members of the original Wailers (as in Bob Marley and the Wailers) will be performing. Tickets are $23.00.

Grateful Dead Spring Tour Ticket Price$

Tommy Devine pointed out on his blog that the price of tickets for each of the venues of this Springs Grateful Dead tour have been announced. Earlier in January, it was announced that former Grateful Dead members Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir would reunite to go on tour along with fellow jammers Warren Haynes and Jeff Chimenti. For the Worcester, MA show I hope to attend, tickets will cost $100.25 each. Better keep money going into that old piggy bank.

The Dead to Tour This Spring

This from their official website and the tour schedule is there too. No word yet on how much the tickets will cost.

Happy New Year, everybody!! Hope and change are in the air! So what better way to kick off 2009 than to confirm what’s been buzzing in the rumor mill for some time: The Dead will be touring for the first time in more than four years, with nearly twenty shows spread across a month from mid-April through mid-May! Details will be announced here soon, so keep your eyes on!

The lineup for this edition of The Dead will be the same one that rocked the house at Penn State last fall at the Obama benefit: The Core Four of Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, joined by guitar monster Warren Haynes and RatDog keyboard ace Jeff Chimenti (both veterans of the 2004 Dead “Wave That Flag” tour). The mood of the band for this Spring Fling is way up, so it’s sure to be a great tour!

Soyal Party

On the night that just so happens to be the night of my birthday, is the night before the winter solstice. In many cultures the Winter Solstice is celebrated. And it will be Saturday night December 20 at the Northampton Center for the Arts.

There will be a drum circle, art, DJ Brando, and the Afro beat band Shokazoba will be playing and more. The Soyal is celebrated by the Hopi and Zuni Indians to celebrate the awakening of the sun. This will be an early celebration since the solstice and the Soyal celebrations are actually the next day on December 21 which is also the shortest day of the year.
